last updated: June 13, 2007 Whether she is performing unaccompanied, in an intimate duo, in one of the numerous small bands she has instigated, or in ensembles as large as Stardusters BIG BAND, Janiece always brings the music home to land. She proved this in her second CD venture IT TAKES TWO in 1997 where she is accompanied by either guitarist Marcos Cavalcante or bassist Tom Hildreth. Joe Bourne, host of Bloomington's WFIU jazz show said "It takes chutzpah and bravery to sing with only bass or guitar accompaniment. Nowhere to hide. Just once voice and one instrument and Janiece does it superbly."
Her third CD, HEART'S DESIRE, features Janiece and the world-class Simon Rowe Trio. In his liner notes, David Baker, Distinguished Professor of Jazz Studies at Indiana University stated: "Janiece Jaffe is a marvelous talent. She is sensitive, thoughtful when appropriate, swinging like mad when required, and masterful and sympathetic in her approach to lyrics. The outstanding performances and sound quality make this a CD you'll want to listen to over and over again."
Her 4th CD, SATURDAY'S CHILD, is a live brilliant version of a radio show on Bloomington's community radio station, WFHB. Guitarist Tyron Cooper brings exquisite sounds to the event and together they create magical moments.
The next Jazz recording venture, STANDING ON THE EDGE, is with Brazilian composer/musician Marcos Cavalcante where Janiece provided all the lyrics to many of his, Monika Herzig and Jorge Fernando de Oliveira's songs. The flavor is a mix of high energy and smooth sounds--great for driving, dancing and listening. The most recent recording project is with fellow vocalist Curtis Cantwell Jackson. SONGS THAT MAKE YOU FEEL THIS WAY is a collaboration of improvisational harmonies of some popular and original songs recorded live at the Player's Pub in Bloomington, Indiana. Audiences have been charmed by this duos uncanny ability to intimately share their voices with tender expression. She can also be heard on 10 other CD projects including Frank Vignola's Peace Concert recorded live in Bloomington, IN. Jaffe has toured Japan, performing Glenn Miller's music for concert audiences. She has performed in Manhattan's "Danny's Skylight Room" and twice at Washington DC's "Blue's Alley", where she performed with Keter Betts, former bassist with Ella Fitzgerald, who said of Jaffe: "Stop looking to the heavens for new stars. There's a bright start here on earth that shines with her voice." Janiece has also appeared with the big bands of David Baker, Dominic Spera, Al Cobine, Clem DeRosa, and the Midcoast Jazz Project, now known as the Busselli Wallarab Jazz Orchestra.
Jaffe has been a featured performer at the Newburgh Jazz Festival; at the Jazz On The Rocks Festival in Sedona, Arizona; Indianapolis Jazz Fest and was a headliner for Crystal Cruiselines' Jazz Cruise. She has sung extensively in the Midwest and has also traveled to teach, record, and sing in Hawaii, Florida, California, Las Vegas, and South America.
Janiece is an enthusiastic teacher for both private students and group workshops. Please periodically check in for an update on upcoming performances and workshops.
